How is hair nourished?

Hair can get greasy and transfers the oils to the face. Skin produces an oil called sebum from the sebaceous glands located right next to the root of the hair. The sebum moistens hair and prevents it from drying. The hair follicle is nourished with the help of the sebum that is transmitted to the hair follicles through channels. The most important thing about sebum is – every one of us secretes a different amount. The amount of sebum produced depends upon our genetics and hormones. During puberty, the secretion of sebum is spiked leading to acne and extra-greasy hair.

How often should you wash hair then?

You should not wash hair every day. Hair is rid of all the essential oils with constant washing. There are certain factors that determine the amount of washing that you require. They are:

The texture of your hair: The texture of your hair is heavily dependent on the sebum and its travel from the roots to the complete length of your hair. If your hair is coarse or curly, the travel and spread of the sebum is relatively slower. Curly, dense hair requires shampooing only once a week, while straight, fine hair may require more amount of washing – maybe twice a week and in some cases even more.

The type of skin: There are different types of skin and hair – normal, medium, dry and oily – and this is just a broad categorization. Not inclusive of hair that may be too dry or too oily, you may have to wash it at least once or twice a week. If your scalp tends to be greasy, it is recommended to wash more often.

Hair styling: If you are an individual who loves to style your hair, then it is only susceptible to damage. In such a case, it is advisable to wash hair less frequently.

The answer:

If you are used to washing your hair every day, it is only best not to do so. Avoid over-stressing your hair with constant washing and shampooing and the by the end of the week, you will see your hair looks healthier and even shinier.
